(Deming)-- A new day and additional categories will highlight this year's Green
Chile Cookoff, part of the Great American Duck Race festivities.
   The Great American Green Chile and Salsa Cookoff, sponsored by Border Foods, 
will be on Saturday, August 26th at 12 noon at the Pavilion at Courthouse Park.
In the past the competition was always on Sunday.
   In addition to the Entree/Main Dish category, which is similar to past
years, there will be a new Salsa Category.
   As in the past all entries are limited to non-commercial food preparers.
Entries must be in by 5 pm on Friday, August 25th, and should be turned to
at Border Foods on "J" Street.  A five pound bag of diced green chile will be 
provided to be used in the dish, and must be picked up before noon that Friday.
   While green chile is required in the main dish category, either green chile
OR jalapenos are acceptable in the salsa division.
   Since there are two categories, prize money has doubled.  First place in
the main dish category receives $250, second place $100, and third $50.  The
same cash prizes will be awarded in the salsa competition.  That means $800
in prize money.
   Each participant will receive a Hatch Chile Gift Pack just for entering.
   Entries will be limited to 20 per category.
   Also, Border Foods has decided to do away with the normal charge for 
tasting cups.  This year, you can taste all the dishes for free.  The tasting
cups will be available to all spectators.
   If you plan to enter, you will need to make a decision since participants
may enter in only one category, main dish or salsa.

Southwestern New Mexico On-Line, Border Foods and Circle S Western Emporium.

   The Great American Duck Race is an annual festival that features live
duck races on a wet and dry track, Hot Air Balloon, Comcast Tournament of
Ducks Parade, Mimbres Memorial Hospital Duck Royalty Pageant, Outhouse Race,
Tortilla Toss and much more.  This year's event is August 24-27th.
