This year's theme for the Mimbres Memorial Hospital Great American Duck Race Duck Royalty Pageants is "Pirates". The duck royalty pageants are open to anyone who has ever had the desire to waddle in public. Judging is based on costume, originality, duck waddle, talent (a 3-5 minute duck routine), and an interview, which includes general fowl knowledge, poise and overall ability to represent the Great American Duck Race and anything the judges may "quack up". The pageant is open to anyone from 0 to 100, with five categories. Those categories are Just Hatched for 0-1 year, Little Waddler for 2-4 year olds, Downey Duckling for 5-8, Darling Duckling for 9-12 and the Duck Queen or King, for those 13 and up. More than $1900 in cash prizes will be awarded, including a $1000 cash prize to the Duck Queen/King. Winners and 1st runner-ups all receive cash prizes. Judging is based on the theme "Pirates". In addition to the cash prizes, winners also receive prizes from bicycles, T-Shirts, Savings bond from First New Mexico Bank, and for the Queen (or King) two nights at the Inn of the Mountain Gods near Ruidoso. Also, winners receive other gifts donated by local merchants. All bicycles are donated by Walmart. There is no cost to enter the pageant, however Spectators at the pageant on Thursday, August 26th, beginning at 6:30 pm will pay an admission fee.. $5 for adults, and $3 for kids unter 12. The pageant is held at the Deming Public Schools Auditorium. Entry forms are available at Circle S Western Emporium at 400 W. Pine and at Southwestern New Mexico On-Line at 202 S.
