 Deming Youth Sweeps Duck Race The finals of the 2009 30th Annual Great American Duck Race were held on Sunday, August 23rd at McKinley Duck Downs (Luna County Courthouse Park). On the Dry Track, the winner was Luke Chao of Deming. Luke is 11 years old and in the sixth Grade. On the Wet Track, the winner was Lawrence Villegas, Jr. of Deming. Lawrence is 6 years old and in the first Grade. Each received a check for $1450 (total of $2900 for the two tracks) in prize money, and increase over last year. Over 130 preliminary heat races were held over the two day event, with 95 on Saturday. Publicity Quacker Dave Johnson said "we would have had a few more races if the weather didn't curtail racing Saturday night". The weather also cancelled the Chino Federal Hot Air Balloon Mass Assension and Balloon Glow on Saturday, however there was a break in the weather and 20 balloons were aloft Sunday morning, August 23rd.  2009 Duck Queen is "Stevey Duck" 42 Contestants participated in the 2009 Mimbres Memorial Hospital Duck Royalty Contest held Thursday night (August 20th) at the Public Schools Auditorium. The Duck Queen is Stevey Richman as "Stevey Duck". Richman is from Deming. In the other categories: Just Hatched (0-1 years) the winner was "Quacky the Wackstar", Bryan Lobato. The Little Waddler winner (2-4 years) was Cyrena Ayon as "Pink Duck", the Downey Duckling (5-8 years), Bianca Valverde as "Rock N B", and the Darling Duckling winner (9-12) was Briana Escarcaga as "Joan Jet Duck". Best of Show in the 2009 Comcast Tournament of Ducks Parade was Deming Elks Lodge #2799. They received $200 and a plaque. Second Place was "The Hop", Enrique Granillo, and third place, Chino Federal Credit Union.
