Deming Youth Dominate Duck Race A 10 and 14 year old from Deming were the big winners at this year's Great American Duck Race. The winner on the Wet Track was 10 year old Robert Rogers, who is a 5th grade student at Deming's Baatan Elementary School. Rogers said he raced only Sunday this year, but did race without success in 2010, so he "decided to give it a try". He said his secret is to "talk" to the duck. He plans to use the $1480 payout for, among other things, video games. He will be back in 2012. The winner on the Dry Track was 14 year old Juan Prieto, who is a 9th grader at Deming High School. He said he could sense that the duck was saying "I'm moving".

Other winners over the weekend: In the Comcast Tournament of Duck's Parade, First Place and a $200 check and plaque, went to Deming Elks Lodge #2750 (float pictured). Second place, and a $100 check went to Solitaire Homes, and Third place and $50 to Surface Tile and Carpet. In the Outhouse Race, Men's Division, Gabe's Fitness Center was the winner, and in both the Women's Division and Coed Division, the winner was the Deming Dust Devils Team.  "Super Duck" 2011 Duck King Before a nearly overflow crowd at the Public School's Auditorium for the Mimbres Memorial Hospital Duck Royalty Pageant, "Super Duck", Marcus Aldaco, was crowned Duck King 2011. Aldaco's skit had him transform from mild-mannered Clark (or should we say "Cluck") Kent to "Super Duck" in his very own phone booth. Besides other prizes, Aldaco received a check from the Duck Race for $1,000. Second place went to a group of about 20 students and Coach Hidi Chavez representing the Deming High School Dance Team. Each of the dancers wore a costume depicting different "super heroes". Second place paid $500.  Other winners Thursday night (August 25th) were, 0-1, Just Hatched, "The Little Green Ducklin", Niko Rodriguez (correction); 2-4, Little Waddler, "Bat Girl", Aubrey Almanza; 5-8, Downey Duckling, "Miss Quack Recycling Hero", Nattruell Jasso; and 9-12, Darling Duckling, "Rainbow Bright Duck", Briana Escarcega. All winners were from Deming. The contest was again hosted by Pageant Quacker, Diana Chadborn, with help from "Duck McPride" and a special appearance from the Elks Lodge Drug Awareness & Youth Activities Mascot, "Elroy the Elk". Elroy poised for a photo with Duck McPride (far right). Chadborn announced there were a total of 66 (sixty-six) contestants in this year's pageant, which is a record.

 | Logo and Theme Announced for 2011
The theme for this year's Great American Duck Race is Super Heroes. This year's logo takes on a comic book cover look, with three well known super heroes. For the third year in a row, this year's logo was drawn by Jesse Kriegel, an art teacher at Deming High School. Kriegel was born outside of El Paso, and moved to Deming as a freshman in High School. He is married to his wife, Liz, and they have two sons, ages two and six years. Kriegel was the artist for 2009 and 2010, when the themes were "Rock N Roll" and "Pirates". Final layout work was completed by Gabe Dominguez. The theme will be used for judging in both the Duck Royalty Pageant Thursday night, and the Tournament of Ducks Parade Saturday morning.
2011 Great American Duck Race T-Shirts will be available this weekend at the Duck Race Booth at Courthouse Park! Booth opens at noon both Saturday and Sunday!
